Richard Strauss’ symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40, was written in 1898, the year when the composer moved from Munich to Berlin to share with Karl Muck the musical direction of the Hofoper (court opera).  The composition is clearly constructed and contains plastic thems as well as a vivid imagination which still appeals to the listener of the present day.
