Ella Fitzgerald – Sings The Jerome Kern Song Book

The Songbook Series, which Ella Fitzgerald – the Queen of Jazz Song – recorded for the Verve label was furthered with compositions by Jerome Kern. Although some of the numbers may be unknown, it is well worth listening to this LP as Ella swings through the twelve musical titles in her own imitable way. The ballads Yesterdays and The Way You Look Tonight are two highlights in which she employs the whole gamut of her amazing harmonic sublimity.

Of course there are hundreds of interpretations of old favourites such as All The Things You Are and I’m Old Fashioned, but hardly one of them can measure up to Ella’s highly personal embellishments and variations. The numbers were carefully selected by Ella herself, come from the years 1929 to 1942, and range from Broadway musicals such as Showboat to the Hollywood films for which Jerome Kern began to compose from 1930 on. The arrangements, all by Nelson Riddle, are highly varied – from carpets of sound from the strings right up to the thrilling blare of brass and saxophones. Ella nestles her voice perfectly into the sound and mood of each number and makes this Songbook a milestone in the history of vocal jazz.
Set down at the Verve studio on the west coast of the USA, the high standard of the recording quality is only now fully revealed on this re-release. You’ll be putting the needle to the groove over and over again once you’ve listened to these numbers.
